www.ri.seThe RISE division ICT is now looking for a post-doctoral researcher in transparent insurance
To strengthen research at the intersection of technology and social science, the SICS unit within RISE ICT is currently looking for a post-doctoral researcher to join the Software and Systems Engineering Laboratory (SSE) in the Kista, Lund or Västerås offices.
Background
Decisions taken by machines can increase productivity and competitiveness as well as compensate for flaws in human decision-making. However, they also bring about some new and challenging problems. Indeed, the problem of black-box like automated decision-making, often built on machine learning, is receiving much attention in the scientific community as well as among the general public. Creating more transparent algorithms is not only an interesting research area, but also a necessity to take full advantage of digitization.
In the project Transparent algorithms in insurance, we develop methods for more transparent use of algorithms in the insurance industry, investigate the consequences of increased transparency, study the ethical requirements that can be placed on algorithms, and examine how much individual programmers affect the outcome and transparency of algorithm-based decision making. Cross-disciplinary research is conducted in close collaboration between RISE and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, as well as with the funding entity Länsförsäkringars Forskningsfond.
The SSE lab is focusing its research on solutions for system and service development in a digital society that becomes increasingly connected and automated. Our research is conducted using a range of research methods, including empirical and evidence-based approaches as well as concrete prototyping of solutions in hardware and software. The lab currently consists of 17 persons, including 8 Ph.D., and the members together have close to 100 years of first-hand industrial experience.
Qualifications
We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher capable of conducting research at the intersection of technology and social science. A successful candidate will have a Ph.D. degree, not older than three years, in either social science (e.g. economics, political science, law, sociology) or a STEM subject (e.g. computer science, mathematics, physics) and probably also an undergraduate degree in a complementary subject, thus bridging the gap between technology and social science. A strong academic track record is highly valued. The successful candidate is expected to bring a novel research perspective to the project Transparent algorithms in insurance, shepherd research ideas from this perspective from inception to publication, and strengthen the cross-disciplinary research environment. Previous experience of working at the intersection of technology and social science, such as cost-benefit analyses of technology, technology policy and forecasting, empirical investigations of behaviors and attitudes affected by technology, etc. is valued. Experience from the insurance business is also valued.
RISE strives for a diversified workforce, and therefore we especially encourage female applicants and applicants with an international background. As the research project requires much co-operation and collaboration with several parties it is essential to have an excellent social ability as well as Swedish language skills.
Location
The position is placed either in the main office of RISE SICS in Kista or in our offices in Lund or Västerås. The position may involve work at other places in Sweden or internationally, in which case travel is needed.
Position and start date
We offer a fixed-period employment of one year full-time. Part-time positions of up to two years can also be discussed, in particular if combined with a position at a university or another relevant actor that can be expected to bring synergies. If there is mutual interest, permanent employment may be offered after the post-doc period. Applications will be evaluated continuously, and the start date will be agreed with the successful applicant.
Contact and application
If this sounds interesting and you want to know more, feel free to contact Stefan Cedergren, 070-7914440. The deadline for applications is 16th of December 2018. Interviews may take place during the application period.
The application should include (i) a short cover letter with a description of general research interests and experience, that also includes a short research proposal outlining how transparent insurance could be studied within your academic subject area, (ii) an academic CV detailing peer-reviewed publications and other relevant experience such as supervision, teaching and referee assignments. The CV should also include contact details for three individuals willing to provide references.
We kindly ask external recruitment companies and salespeople not to contact us as we are governed by the Swedish Procurement Act.
