The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) invites applications for a Post-doc for the ESS neutron test beamline located at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB).

Description of Division

The Neutron Instruments Division houses the instrument scientists and post-docs, responsible for designing, constructing and then operating the neutron instruments of the ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are in the process of being implemented, optimized to take full advantage of the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source.

Supporting the instrument projects are a number of technical and method developments, requiring access to neutron test beamlines, of which there are currently three: a time-of-flight beamline "V20" at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB), a constant wavelength beamline at the Institute for Energy Research (IFE) at Kjeller in Norway, and a time-of-flight beamline at the Budapest Neutron Center (BNC) in Hungary. In addition, a test beamline is being designed for installation and operation at the ESS in Lund when it comes online in 2020.

The current position is for a post-doctoral researcher to assist in the operation of these beamlines, with the main emphasis on V20 at HZB, as well as in the design and construction of the test beamline to be built at ESS. The position will be primarily based in Berlin until the beginning of 2020, by which time the reactor will cease to operate, and the place of work will move to Lund, Sweden.

Main Responsibilities

The main task of this position is to support the research and development work taking place on V20. This is focused on developing technology and methods for making the best use of the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS, which is reproduced on V20, using a novel wavelength-frame-multiplication (WFM) chopper system [1,2]. The successful candidate will work closely with the instrument scientist for test beamlines, running and maintaining V20, and will be expected to be able to work autonomously on V20 after an adaptation and training period, supporting researchers from within and outside ESS, performing and supporting R&D on neutron technologies and method developments on the beamline. Areas of study can include design of neutron instrumentation, neutron imaging methods and reduction and analysis of data obtained using WFM. The work is hands-on and will involve integration of technical components from different suppliers and teams within ESS.

He/she will be supported in pursuing an independent research programme using neutron scattering methods.

This work will involve international travel which is expected to correspond to less than 20% of their time.
