Two Marie Curie Fellowships in Neurobiology/ Pharmacology
The Faculty of Medicine is one of five faculties of Umeå University. The faculty is an organization for education and research groups in the fields of medicine, odontology and health care. It comprises 13 departments, 2 research centres and 12 academic programmes. Within the faculty there are about 3 000 undergraduate and 650 graduate students. About 1 000 people are employed here, among them about 500 teachers/researchers.
The endocannabinoid research group at the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Neuroscience, Umeå University is focussed upon understanding the mechanisms by which endogenous cannabinoids are metabolised, and identifying potential therapeutic areas whereby compounds affecting these processes may be useful. We are seeking two post-doctoral / experienced researchers, funded by the European Union, to undertake innovative research into the role of the endocannabinoid system in the development and potential treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. The positions, starting earliest May 2009, latest November 2009 are for 1 year, with a possible extension up to the end of November 2010, when the financial support from the EU ends.
A documented working knowledge of one (or more) of the following techniques is advantageous:
• autoradiography, in particular [35S]GTPγS autoradiography
• culture of activated microglia, ideally microglia – neuronal co-cultures
• organotypical culture of the spinal cord
Knowledge of the endocannabinoid system is a merit, but not a requirement
The definition of “Post-doc / experienced researcher is a scientist who has actively been involved in research for a total period of 4-10 years. The successful candidates will interact closely with the other members of the group, and a good level of written and spoken English is thus a requirement. Since the post is funded by the EU as part of the Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge and the work will be performed in a Swedish laboratory, the candidate must be a citizen of a member state or an associated state of the EU and should not have been working in Sweden for more than 12 months over the last 3 years. Swedish citizens are not eligible for this post. Applications which do not fulfil these criteria will be disregarded.
For more information, contact Prof. Christopher Fowler,

Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled. Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.
Your application should include a curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing research experience and interests, and the names and addresses of two individuals who are willing to act as references.
Your complete application, marked with “CCMSTneuro and the reference number 315-70-09, should be sent to
jobb@umu.se or to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive March 15th, 2009 at the latest.
