Department of Plant Protection Biology
The Department of Plant Protection Biology at SLU Alnarp has more than 50 researchers and staff. Leading research is conducted in resistance biology, integrated plant protection and chemical ecology. The objective of the Resistance Biology Unit is to meet the future need to minimize the use of chemical fungicides, and the effects of climate change that lead to new plant diseases patterns and stresses. This project is in collaboration with the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science at Lund University and is part of NordPlant - a new Nordic Hub for Sustainable Agriculture and Forest Production in Future Nordic Climates. Duties:
In this project, spectral analysis and computer vision based on RGB and hyperspectral images from satellite, UAVs and handheld devices will be used to detect and quantify disease and the effect of drought in field-grown potato. Remote sensing data from both small pre-breeding and full-scale agricultural plots will be analysed. The work will partly be in close collaboration with stakeholders, since it is part of the Public Private Partnership the Plant Phenotyping Project.

Qualifications:
The candidate should have a PhD degree or equivalent related to the fields of bioinformatics, mathematics, physical geography, engineering or informatics and an interest in plants and agriculture. Previous experience in machine learning, remote sensing and image analysis is highly recommended. Excellent English language skills and a will to communicate with biologists is a must.
