Are you ready to drive sustainable innovation in carbon fibre recycling at Chalmers University of Technology?

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join a cross disciplinary project at Chalmers University of Technology focused on the recycling of carbon fibre composites. The project aims to develop a novel method for recovering fibres using magnetic fields, with the goal of lowering energy use and minimizing environmental impact.

This collaborative effort brings together expertise in materials science, physics, polymer chemistry, and composite mechanics, with a particular emphasis on electromagnetic processing. The work involves close cooperation across several departments.

You will have access to a well-equipped experimental environment and be part of a collaborative team dedicated to creating practical, sustainable solutions.

About the research project
Carbon fibre composites are used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and wind energy due to their strength and low weight. However, recycling these materials at the end of their life is a growing challenge. Current recycling methods often damage the fibres, use a lot of energy, or have negative environmental effects. This project aims to develop a more sustainable and energy efficient method for recycling carbon fibre composites. The approach uses alternating magnetic fields to heat the material in a controlled way, breaking down the polymer matrix while preserving the quality of the fibres.

Information about the division and the department
The position is based in the Division of Materials and Manufacture at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science (IMS), with Chalmers University of Technology.

Our division conducts cutting edge research in materials design, processing, and advanced characterization. We promote interdisciplinary collaboration and sustainability focused research, with strong ties to both academic and industrial partners. The research environment is dynamic and supportive, offering excellent opportunities to develop solutions with real world relevance and impact.

This project will be carried out in close collaboration with researchers from the Division of Material and Computational Mechanics at IMS and the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, contributing to a highly interdisciplinary research setting.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

• PhD in materials science, physics, polymer chemistry, or chemical engineering, preferably awarded no more than three years before the application deadline.*
• Proven ability to work across disciplines
• Research experience in recycling methods, alternating magnetic field processing, or composite processing
• Experience with characterization techniques for electrical, mechanical, and electromagnetic properties; familiarity with XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and electrical conductivity measurements is required
• Ability to perform basic simulations to support and accelerate experiments
• Ability to work independently but also as part of a team
• Good command of spoken and written English

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service.

What you will do
The majority of your time will be devoted to conducting research within the scope of the project, in close collaboration with other researchers. As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to actively contribute your own ideas, take initiative in shaping the research direction, and effectively communicate scientific results both orally and in writing.
You will also mentor and support PhD/master's students working on related projects.

Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
