AstraZeneca is a major international healthcare business engaged in the research, development, manufacture and marketing of prescription pharmaceuticals and the supply of healthcare services. But we're more than one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. At AstraZeneca, we're proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. Here, employees are empowered to express diverse perspectives - and are made to feel valued, energized and rewarded for their ideas and creativity.

Description of Opportunity:

We have a fantastic opportunity for an AstraZeneca sponsored post doctoral position in the Neuroscience (CNS & Pain) Innovative Medicines (iMED) Department in Södertälje.

We believe that defects in molecular sorting of proteins in sensory neurons, leads to abnormal function and ultimately the sensation of pain. The aim of the project is to therefore investigate the mechanisms by which dorsal root ganglion neurons (DRG) in vitro, traffic transducing or presynaptic proteins towards specific compartments within the cells. The approach will use DRG cultures and cutting-edge methodologies such as micropatterned growth substrates to guide axons, tagging and molecular imaging approaches to address the molecular targeting of proteins in these cells. The academic supervisor for the project, a recognised Professor, expert in the field of sensory transduction and whose lab has expertise in many of the methods to be used. Your scientific research will also give you the opportunity to work with (and influence) fellow scientists across many other disciplines. You will be expected to deliver the results of your novel research in-house via global working groups and externally via meetings and through publications.

The role's major responsibilities will include:
Culturing of DRG neurons on micropatterned substrates, establishment of the molecular markers to indicate 'peripheral' and 'central' terminals
Identification of molecular tags to enable monitoring of vesicle sorting in the cultures
Working towards an understanding of the influence of the growth substrate on the targeting of proteins within the cell
Identification of approaches (pharmacological and/or molecular) to interfere with these processes
Show strong initiative in developing ideas, and bringing them to functional use within AstraZeneca.
Interface with scientists from across many disciplines while at the same time being able to work independently.
Communicate results both within AstraZeneca via global working groups and externally at meetings and through publications.
Work collaboratively with other experts within the Neuroscience Department
Minimum experience:

A PhD in one or more of the following areas:
Biochemistry, Pharmacology, or Molecular Biology
Specialisation in the field of neurobiology, especially if applied to sensory neurons
Preferred experience/requirements:
Experience of preparing and working with primary neuronal cultures
Tagging approaches and also imaging of proteins within neurons
Experience of manipulating cultures using either pharmacological or molecular tools, especially related to trafficking
