he Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Post Doc Accelerator Scientist position.

Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world's most powerful neutron source. The Beam Physics Section is responsible for the study of the dynamics of the protons in the linac, development of the physics software applications for the control room and leading the commissioning and operation of the ESS linac.

Job description and responsibilities:
The Beam Physics section of the Accelerator Division at ESS is opening a postdoctoral position on the upgrade study of the ESS linac for the proposed neutrino super beam facility. The position is financed through the Horizon 2020 grant from the EU.
The study is focused on the potential of the ESS linac for an upgrade feasibility to produce a high-flux neutrino beam, simultaneously with the high-flux neutron beam, for the accumulator ring of the ESSnuSB project, which aims at the discovery of Lepontic CP violation. The ESS linac power will need to be increased so that the neutron users will still receive the same proton power while an additional 5 MW of proton beam is delivered to the accumulator ring. The candidate will, in collaboration with others at the ESS Accelerator Division, study the design of the ESS linac and work on simulating the transport of the H- beam for the ESSnuSB linac, study the effect of higher order modes, HOMs, on the beam, and simulate the losses from the H- beam in the linac. The candidate should work with those designing the accumulator and the target for optimizing and proposing a design which improves the overall efficiency of such a facility.
Work Description: Simulations of the beam dynamics with space charge of a high intensity H- beam, including transport, loss simulations and different stripping and loss phenomena, and study the mutual effect of HOMs and the beam on each other. Experience in design of similar or other high power linacs and injectors to compressor rings is preferred. Specifically study different operational modes, and study and optimize the beam injection and extraction. Regular presentations of the different development steps will be necessary, in the presence of specialists on the different topics.

Required qualifications:
The applicant must have a doctoral degree, at the start of employment, in physics or a related area, with experience in accelerator physics and, preferably, beam dynamics of hadron linacs.
Excellent capabilities to perform independent research shall be demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or at important conferences in the accelerator domain. Solid knowledge of particle tracking and beam optics codes is an advantage. Knowledge on using Machine Learning on reducing the losses of the H- beam is also an advantage.
Our Ideal Candidate will have:
A strong interest in academic research, an interest to collaborate and exchange competences with other accelerator physicists and who is willing to travel for that. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team. The candidate shall take responsibility for the project, be innovative and have a genuine interest in physics and technology.
The Candidate should show initiative, be proactive with good interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure (deadlines).
Our work environment is characterised by fast growth, high rate of work, and an international atmosphere with highly academic personnel. You must therefore enjoy the diversity of such and have a personality suited for the challenges it holds. In this growing organisation you will have the possibility to take part in developing new routines and processes. Our work environment is exciting and forward thinking and relies heavily on personal initiative.
