The Department of Urban and Rural Development offers a stimulating research environment. Research and education at the department are carried out at five different divisions: Agrarian History, Rural Development, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Communication and Political Science and Natural Resource Governance. The appointment will be at the Division of Rural Development. The Division of Rural Development consists of two subject areas: Rural Development in the Global South and Rural Development in Sweden and Europe. A Bachelor of Science with a Major in Rural Development and an international master's program in Rural Development and Natural Resource Management are offered by the Division.

PhD student on Irrigation and Gender in Nepal
Description:
The PhD position is within the subject of Rural development in the Global South. The PhD position is set within the FORMAS-funded project The Future of Agrarian Mountain (FAML): Youth Aspirations and Irrigation Modernisation in Nepal" and focuses on irrigation development, gender and the effects of the feminisation of agriculture on inequality and the overall conditions for rural regions with a focus on Nepal. Applications are welcome by candidates able to show rural development expertise, holding a MA or ideally a MPhil degree, and with publication experience, ideally in the field of gender and irrigation, long field work experience in Nepal and fluency in Nepali language. Applicants should provide a brief text outlining their suitability for the research project, and provide key connections to ongoing research within the Department of Urban and Rural Development.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join and develop our research group on Rural development in the Global South. Your tasks will be: i) to fulfill the requirements for a PhD such as course work, conference presentations and three international publications ii) through extensive fieldwork in Nepal bring critical perspectives on the implications of increased feminization in agriculture for rural development and irrigation development iii) take an active part in academic activities in the Division.
Qualifications:
The candidate should have an MA and ideally MPhil in social sciences (preferably Human Geography or related field), and documented expertise in the area of interdisciplinary research and of having ethnographic fieldwork skills in rural areas of Nepal. The applicant should also have documented capability to carry out independent research and skills in writing and leading international scientific publications. Excellent English communication skills are expected. The performance in the interview will be decisive.

To qualify for third-cycle (Doctoral) courses and study programmes, you must have a second-cycle (Master's) qualification. Alternatively, you must have conducted a minimum of four years of full-time study, of which a minimum of one year at second-cycle level.
