About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia's security, enhancing Australia's prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia's pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the Position
Under supervision from the Senior Policy and Research Officer, this position works to support the Political Economic Section at the Australian Embassy Moscow. Based at the Australian Embassy in Stockholm, the position undertakes research, analysis, reporting and advice including on the Russian Federation's and countries of accreditation's (including Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) foreign, trade, development and multilateral policies.
Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
Undertake research, analysis and reporting on issues including foreign, trade, development and multilateral policies in Russia and countries of accreditation.
Undertake timely and quality advice on Australian interests in the region to Moscow post management and DFAT Canberra to draft cable responses and background notes as required.
Monitor daily media reports in Russia and countries of accreditation and prepare summaries of key developments and emerging issues of interest.
Support posted officers in their professional interactions to advance bilateral and multilateral relations between Australia and countries of accreditation.
Ability to provide efficient and effective translation and interpretation between English and Russian as required.
Contribute to productive working relationships with contacts across government, business and media and build knowledge of stakeholder views and trends.
Support the administration and logistics of ministerial and official visits.
Assist with the broader Public Diplomacy agenda including social media management and organising and planning events.
Effectively work across geographies and time zones as part of a team to support Australia's global, regional and bilateral interests, this includes the Embassy's public diplomacy agenda.
Required Qualifications/Experience
Tertiary qualifications in International Relations or a related field (or equivalent level experience).
Demonstrated excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and Russian and ability to translate and interpret between the two. Other regional language skills would be an advantage.
Demonstrated effective research and analytical skills and ability to provide timely and relevant information.
Strong knowledge and sound understanding of institutions, priorities and processes in Russia and countries of accreditation.
Excellent stakeholder management skills, including strong interpersonal, representational and networking skills.
Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships and work effectively in a small team to ensure positive outcomes.
Initiative and flexibility to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines with integrity and honesty.
Ability to remain discreet and respect confidentiality at all times.
