Biopharmaceuticals R&D is committed to the development of next generation innovative medicines and we are building a Cell Therapy department with the goal to establish AstraZeneca as a world-leader in Cell Therapy across disease areas within Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) and Respiratory and Inflammation (R&I). The department will bring together >50 specialists to support the organisation with cell therapy expertise and capabilities. The new department has an agile "biotech-like" culture, with specialists in the department working closely with experts across AstraZeneca globally to leverage the existing and emerging platforms in stem cell technologies.

As a Medical Lead you will be reporting to the Head of Cell Therapy Biopharmaceutical R&D. You will be a valued member of the leadership team with responsibility to continue the build of the Biopharmaceutical R&D Cell Therapy Department and drive overall medical strategy and leadership of the department. You will thus be a key player in the delivery of our aspirations to be differentiated within the Cell Therapy space and thus have strong impact on the shape of AstraZeneca R&D.

The role can be placed at either of AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D sites in Gothenburg, Sweden or Cambridge, UK where you will work at the fore-front of Cell Therapy science in a global, cross-disciplinary environment. Competitive salary and benefits package on offer.

What you'll do

In this key role you will be responsible for the development and delivery of strategic and tactical leadership for clinical development of Cell Therapies within Biopharmaceuticals R&D. As a renowned expert in the Cell Therapy field you will establish good working relations with the AstraZeneca clinical teams globally and provide expertise to the design, conduct, monitoring, data interpretation and reporting of Cell Therapy clinical trials. Responsibilities include:

* Strategic planning, implementation and operation of Cell Therapy development projects - including interaction with and presentations to senior management
* Develop effective collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including Clinical Development both regionally and globally
* Support the development of the Cell Therapy strategy in collaboration with senior stakeholders
* Direct/Oversee design and implementation of early stage clinical projects in Cell Therapy. Ensure that the overall scientific and medical content of all clinical programs is scientifically and clinically rigorous. Monitor study progress, ensure proper study conduct and adherence to the protocol, lead data review, evaluation, and analyses.
* Lead teams in designing scientifically rigorous effective clinical protocols aligned with clinical development plans
* Leads regulatory communication and preparation of higher level documents
* Contributes to the development of the Cell Therapy senior management team in area of expertise
* Maintains a high degree of understanding and awareness on new and emerging medical and scientific development and develops contacts with opinion leaders
* Help develops the Cell Therapy department and instils a culture of agility and innovation, foster a working environment that promotes science and encourages innovation in drug development

Essential for the role

This highly visible position will require a well-trained Physician who is driven by science and have strong leadership and communication skills . You have a Medical Degree M.D and preferentially a Ph.D in a relevant scientific discipline. Solid experience of advanced Cell Therapy research and development is a must! In addition, you are well networked and have a strong reputation within the Cell Therapy field.

The right person for this role have a proven track record in Cell Therapy development, particularly early phase clinical trials, design of strategic development plans, protocol writing & study conduct, health authorities interaction, the principles of translational medicine. You also have experience of successfully leading project teams.

With your excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills you have the ability to influence strategically and persuade tactfully, to obtain desired outcomes while maintaining effective, positive organisational relationships. You operate effectively across boundaries in a global matrix research environment to influence both internal and external stakeholders, including senior management. Your passion, strong vision and drive to succeed together with key qualities like entrepreneurial working style will make you an great addition to the team!
