MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
We are looking for an internationally recognized scientist with a strong scientific network in the field of physical sciences using synchrotron radiation to become our new Physical Science Director.

You have the opportunity to work closely with our host Lund University, other national and international universities and synchrotron radiation facilities as well as with local partners such as Science Village Scandinavia and the European Spallation Source.
The position is a permanent position as researcher at MAX IV with a renewable 5-year assignment as Physical Science Director.
Work tasks
The capabilities and capacity of MAX IV will continue to grow for at least another decade. As science director you will partially initiate and lead the work to realize such growth as well as be responsible for leading and operating the physical science activities at Sweden's largest research infrastructure. This requires scientific creativity, an ability to reach out and connect to top-researchers in Sweden and around the world, as well as working on obtaining the funding to realize the scientific ambitions. This work is done in very close collaboration with the Life Science director.
You will be part of the MAX IV management team. As part of the management team you share the responsibility for operation, development and visibility of the laboratory as a whole. Leading and developing people on all levels is part of your tasks. We are working actively to incorporate new complementary expertise, increase diversity and to strengthen the MAX IV team and to open the facility to new user communities.
Within the Physical Science Division, you will be line manager for four group managers and about 10 direct reports. You will be responsible for setting goals, suggest and follow up on budgets and tasks related to systematic work environment. An important group within the Physical Science Division is the Beamline Office, which oversees design and construction of all beamlines at MAX IV. To steer this group, you bring substantial experience in project management and planning.
Qualifications
- PhD in natural science, engineering or a related area with own experience of synchrotron-based research
- Internationally recognized scientist with a strong scientific network in the field of physical science and synchrotron radiation
- Proven leadership in science and scientific management
- Experience from building synchrotron instrumentation or leadership experience from a synchrotron radiation facility will be a definite merit
- Experience as the principal investigator in major science funding application
- A Scientific network in Sweden and experience of Swedish or EU funding applications is a definite merit
- Talent and interest in communicating science is a benefit.
- Teaching experience at university level will also be meriting
- You are fluent in English oral and written, Swedish is seen as a merit
Interviews are scheduled in two rounds: 1st round: Sept 28th, 29th and Oct 4th. 2nd round: Oct 12th & 13th 2017. The interviews will be conducted on site in Lund. Please state your availability in your application.
