Description
Window of opportunity for change in disaster risk science
Disasters can bring important changes, positive or negative, in society and its interplay with ecological systems. There is often a general expectation that the reconstruction after natural hazards ravages will lead to reducing the risk of similar damage and disruption to arise again. This expectation can literary be described as a window of opportunity for change that opened, a concept that includes political, social, economic, technological and environmental dimensions. One can also describe the window from the fact that natural hazards through their impact reveal some shortcomings in society's risk management and not necessarily only linked to an extreme and unusual event. The aim of this PhD project is to increase knowledge about the changes that actually occur after natural hazard forced disasters and to discuss various obstacles and success factors in society's reconstruction. There is a lack of literature on studies that describe the nature and evolution of these changes in different time perspectives. Theoretically, the project includes concepts like complexity, systemic dependencies, a dynamic community development and lessons learning. Dissertation work involves interdisciplinary studies and collaborations.

Possible research design: Case studies of past disasters, nationally and internationally in various time horizons, based on theoretical frameworks. Data collection through interviews and document studies are probable approaches.

Other type of duties, usually teaching and administrative tasks, will require up to 20% of the student's time. Information on postgraduate studies is found on the university website: www.kau.se/en/research/doctoral-studies. Local guidelines exist for salary levels.
