The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/aquatic-sciences) is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The department has some 130 employees. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as on aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department is part of a Soil-Water-Environment cluster, a recently established competence center for landscape-level processes that also includes the Departments of 'Soil and Environment' and 'Energy and Technology'. The breadth of expertise among the 300 members in combination with a well-equipped infrastructure creates a unique platform for high quality research as well as environmental monitoring and assessment.
PhD-student in Environmental Assessment with focus on greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural streams
Description:
The main task of the project is to investigate how different greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) are produced, transported and released into the atmosphere from ditches and rivers draining agricultural-dominated areas. Inland waters are known to be globally important sources of greenhouse gases, but there is a lack of data from agricultural ecosystems where emissions could be large and under-reported. The project contains a large proportion of field work where a combination of sensor-based and manual analysis of greenhouse gases, water chemistry and hydrology will be carried out. In addition to measurements in surface water, processes in both sediment and groundwater will be investigated. The work will benefit from existing environmental monitoring programs and infrastructure for agricultural areas run by SLU.
Qualifications:
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a master's degree in environmental science, hydrology, biology, limnology, natural geography, or equivalent. The applicant should have a genuine research interest, good communication skills, a high work ethic, be a team player and function well in a research environment. Good knowledge of biogeochemistry and hydrology is necessary. Experience or knowledge of the biogeochemistry of different greenhouse gases is an advantage. Experience of GIS is also an advantage. The applicant must have a good ability to express oneself both orally and in written English. Driving license and driving experience are a prerequisite for being able to carry out the field studies.
