Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics

The subject of Energy Engineering at the Division of Energy Science belongs to the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. At the subject of Energy Engineering we work closely with companies/industries in both research and student projects. The research conducted has high international standards, and we collaborate with researchers around the world.

The Division of Energy Science at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) has an open PhD position in the subject of Energy Engineering. Your research studies will involve the simulation of reactive porous media flows, for application in the production of direct reduced iron using biomass at Höganäs AB.

Subject description
Energy engineering includes the development of technologies and processes for a sustainable energy supply. The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy efficient use in industry and society.

Duties
As a PhD student you will work for a doctoral degree as the final goal, according to the goals specified in the Higher Education Ordinance. In parallel with your thesis work, you will also develop your general skills by taking courses as part of research education.

The PhD project is part of a four-year research project supported by the Swedish Energy Agency and Höganäs AB. The overall aim of the project is to gain fundamental knowledge that supports the replacement of fossil-based reduction agents with renewable biomass in Höganäs AB's metal powder production. A part of this project is dedicated to the development of numerical simulation tools, which are used for evaluation of the possible consequences of replacing coal with biomass on the process and product quality. We will work with researchers and engineers in Höganäs very closely, so you will have the opportunity to be involved in the development of more sustainable industry.

The Höganäs sponge iron process can be characterized by a system of solid porous media undergoing heterogeneous chemical reactions. Within the PhD research project, we will simulate how different biomass-based reduction agents would react in the process. Together with us, you will develop a simulation model. In collaboration with Höganäs AB, you will also have an opportunity to test your simulation results in practical studies using a pilot-scale version of their industrial process. For more information about the project, see the link below:

The position includes a fulltime fixed-term employment for 4 years. Departmental duties, such as administration and/or lecturing up to 20 % of full time work may be added. The lecturing assignments are within the courses given for the MSc program in Sustainable Energy Engineering.

Qualifications
In order to be eligible you must have a degree of Master of Science in chemical engineering, material science, applied physics, or similar specialisations. You should have a good knowledge of the English language and good oral and written proficiency. It is desirable that you have a strong interest in new green-technologies and numerical studies. We value a candidate who likes to work in a team but can also take initiative on their own. We see it as an advantage if you have experience in CFD simulation, reaction engineering, or chemical kinetics.

Information
Luleå University of Technology is actively working on equality and diversity that contributes to a creative study- and work environment. The University's core values ??are based on respect, trust, openness and responsibility.

In case of different interpretations of the English and Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence.
Given equal qualification, priority will be given to the under-represented gender.
