Description:
We are looking for a dedicated person with an interest in research on the conservation of aquatic ecosystems, as well as in biodiversity and fish ecology.

As a PhD student you will work in a project with the overall goal of providing recommendations for how environmental design (e.g. different rehabilitation measures) can be used in regulated lakes and reservoirs, while balancing the needs of ecosystems and society with regard to a future climate. The aim of the project is also to gain new knowledge about long-term effects of hydropower production in regulated lakes and reservoirs on biodiversity (with focus on fish, fish food and aquatic vegetation), and how negative effects can be mitigated with the help of environmental design solutions.

The project is based on field studies as well as a review and analysis of previously collected material. The field studies will be carried out with the hydropower industry through collaboration within the competence center SVC (Swedish Centre for Sustainable Hydropower), aswell as with researchers and doctoral students involved in the HydroCen research center (Norway). Communication with researchers, authorities, and other stakeholders is an important part of the doctoral project. Part of the work is linked to the ongoing environmental assessment of Swedish hydropower.

You will have the opportunity to develop your networks within academia and across different disciplines. You will do your studies in the field, as well as through data processing and writing of scientific articles, which are compiled in a doctoral thesis suitable for examination. Doctoral studies also include taking the necessary courses.

Qualifications:
To be eligible, a second-cycle degree (e.g. master's degree or equivalent) in biology, aquatic ecology, limnology or another relevant subject is required. The scientific publication is in English so a good ability to communicate in English is a requirement. A driver's license for a car and driving experience are also required.

Required qualifications:

• A Master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, aquatic ecology, limnology or an equivalent relevant subject.
• A genuine interest in research and learning how to do research.
• Very good collaboration and organizational skills.
• Very good knowledge and ability to express yourself in English, both in writing and orally.
• Driving license for a car, including driving experience

Qualifications considered a merit:

• Good knowledge in fish ecology.
• Knowledge of the environmental impact of hydropower.
• Experience of field studies and field inventory work.
• Experience in data management and statistical analyses.
• Experience in writing scientific texts. Having problem-solving analytical skills.
• To be able to demonstrate independently and skillfully conducted scientific work and/or reports to authorities and/or industry

Qualifications specifically considered a merit:

• Personal qualities relevant to the position, such as good organizational skills, ability to take own initiatives, as well as good planning skills and good ability to work in a team.
• Communication with various actors (both in the hydropower industry and local communities) will usually take place in Swedish. Good knowledge of Swedish is therefore particularly meritorious.

Place of work:
The Institute of Freshwater Research, SLU, Drottningholm - Stockholm

Forms for funding or employment:
