/>Background
The possibility to predict steel properties using computational techniques provides many advantages when applied to product and process development in industry. There is a direct economic benefit in the reduced development times that can result from using computational predictions to assess the most promising development possibilities. Increasing the success rates of new product and process implementations, and decreasing the amounts of preliminary trials, will provide economic benefits.

Project description
Fine-scale precipitation (nano-metre sized) is one of the most effective phase transformations for obtaining high strength materials. The control and optimization of the strengthening effect requires an in-depth understanding of the precipitation processes, as well as understanding of how the precipitation develops during processing. In the proposed project precipitation processes in steel will be studied, using advanced characterization techniques combined with modelling approaches. The project will lead to increased understanding of how precipitation can be tailored in industrial steels to optimize properties.

Methods
Computational simulations of precipitation will be applied using software such as Thermo-Calc and Prisma. Precipitation is simulated based on the parameters calculated by the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) software tools and thermodynamics/mobility databases. Advanced microstructural characterisation will be made. Different techniques will be applied, such as XRD/SEM/TEM. Depending on needs, access is available to use atom-probe techniques (APT), and synchrotron and neutron facilities via collaboration networks.

Collaboration with Swerea KIMAB, steel industry and KTH
The PhD project is a collaboration between Swerea KIMAB, KTH and 2 large steel producing companies.

Qualifications
We are seeking a PhD student with Materials Science background or similar focus in the chemistry / physics programs. Knowledge about metallurgy and simulation is meriting. You will be located at Swerea KIMAB in Kista and the PhD studies will start in early 2017.

Interested
Please send your application as soon as possible. Please fill out the application below.
Swerea KIMAB (Research institute) develops and improves solutions for materials research and works in close contact with Swedish steel industry, and thus has a good understanding of the industrial needs. KTH (Academic partner) is leading in Materials Research, with a strong focus on steels. Research within the department is pioneering in development of materials modelling, and also has extensive experience in microstructure characterization of steels. The academic supervisor has excellent knowledge of high-resolution techniques, and of their applications to steels research. The industrial partners are large steel producing companies.
