At Dalarna University, tourism has been a subject for both teaching and research for over 30 years. We are now looking for one or more PhD students to add to our growing group of engaged tourism researchers.
The PhD positions are full time and including a maximum of 20% departmental (teaching and administrative) work. The position is for a licentiate degree with a possible extension to a doctoral degree. Students will be enrolled in a PhD programme in either Tourism Studies or Human Geography. PhD positions are for a specified time-period in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (HF chapter 5). A start date of September 1, 2017 or as soon after this date as possible is preferred. The successful PhD student's main place of study/work will be at the School for Technology and Business Studies, Borlänge Campus, Dalarna University, Borlänge, Sweden.
The knowledge area
Tourism Studies and Human Geography at Dalarna University has expanded rapidly in the last few years. Today the group consists of one Professor, two associate Professors, ten senior lecturers/lecturers and one PhD Student. Research is focused around themes such as tourism destination development and marketing, nature- and culture based tourism, events, mobilities, entrepreneurship and regional development. In 2016 we established the Centre for Tourism and Leisure Research (CeTLeR) which focuses on research and industry collaboration in the fields of tourism, leisure and experiences.
Work tasks
The PhD positions are dedicated to tourism and destination development with a specific focus on one of the following: 1. Nature based experiences; sustainable and digitalized development of forest tourism experiences. 2. Events as a driver for destination development, event analysis and evaluation of effects. These two orientations are connected to externally funded research projects.
Qualifications
The applicant must:
1. have a degree at an advanced level in Tourism Studies or Human Geography or equivalent.
2. have completed courses totaling at least 240 credits, including a minimum of 60 credits at an advanced level, or
3. demonstrate acquisition of equivalent skills in another way, either in or out of the country (Sweden).
Specific qualifications:
These positions requires a good knowledge of written and spoken English. Accuracy, good analytical and creative ability, ability to work independently but also work in collaboration with others are qualities that are highly valued. Research and teaching experience is desirable.
Selection
The assessment of candidates is largely based on the quality of their Masters thesis. We are looking for evidence that the applicant is able to undertake high quality, self-guided research. The selection is also based on problem-solving and analytical skills and the ability to set and work toward ambitious goals. As the PhD candidates will be part of an interdisciplinary research group, good interpersonal skills are also required.
Selection of applicants will be made after a qualitative overall assessment of their abilities to fulfill the duties of employment.

Dalarna University strives for gender balance and increased diversity. Salary, in according to the PhD fixed salary scale of Dalarna University, currently starts at 26 000 SEK/month. General terms for this position are according to the provisions under the Higher Education Ordinance, chapter 5.
