The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and Linköping University, LiU, announce joint recruitment of doctoral student positions in Infra Informatics with a focus on simulation and analysis of congestion at bus terminals and future traffic signals.

The doctoral student positions are funded by the Swedish Transport Administration through CTR (Centre for Traffic Research). CTR is a Swedish competence center that initiates, coordinates and conducts research and development in modeling and analysis of traffic processes. The projects are carried out in collaboration between the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and Linköping University, and with supervision from both parties. The doctoral students will divide their time equally between VTI and Linköping University.

About VTI

The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) is a commissioned authority that conducts applied research and qualified investigations in the field of transport. We are about 250 employees. We are now looking for additional employees for the Linköping office for the unit of Transport Analysis and Logistics. The unit has about 40 employees and works with applied and socially motivated research as well as qualified investigations in logistics, transport and traffic systems, as well as energy supply and digitalization. The focus is on developing knowledge and models that enable more reliable decision-making data to meet goals in areas such as efficiency, accessibility, availability, environment, energy supply, resilience and safety.

About LiU

LiU offers a stimulating and international environment with doctoral students, postdocs, senior researchers and professors from different parts of the world. Research, innovation and education are conducted in an open and creative climate that fosters collaboration both within academia and with industrial partners. A PhD degree provides an excellent foundation for an exciting career in academia or in business. The position at LiU will be linked to the Division of Communication and Transport Systems (KTS), with its location in Norrköping.

About the role

The third-cycle subject Infra Informatics deals with issues concerning the planning, design, utilisation, control and analysis of infrastructure and systems for the transport of people and goods as well as for telecommunications. The two specialisations in Infra Informatics for which we are looking for doctoral students are:

• Congestion at bus terminals: How can bus terminals be improved to reduce congestion and delay? In the project, you will develop methods and implement algorithms that use large amounts of open data on bus movements to quantify and analyze congestion effects, as well as enable effective simulation of traffic at bus terminals. Your work will include statistical analysis and modeling as well as programming for handling large amounts of data and implementing developed algorithms.

• Design and simulation of future traffic signals: How can the control of Swedish traffic signals be improved by using and combining data on individual vehicles from connected vehicles and/or surface detection (such as lidar, radar, video)? In the project, you will work both on developing new control strategies and evaluating them using traffic simulation (e.g. with tools such as SUMO or Vissim). Some practical measurements and/or data processing may also be included.

A doctoral student position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a doctoral student, you are educated in scientific methodology and trained in scientific work. This includes publishing your work in scientific papers and presenting at national and international conferences. You are also offered the opportunity to deepen and broaden your knowledge by taking doctoral courses, trying out the role of teacher and through participation in other research projects.

About you

To apply for this position, you need to meet the requirements for doctoral studies at the Division of Communication and Transport Systems, Linköping University: LiU. You have a Master of Science in Engineering or equivalent with a focus on traffic analysis, transport planning, systems in technology and society, applied mathematics, engineering physics, computer science or other equivalent education at master's level. Experience of working with optimization, modeling, simulation, programming, statistical analyses, big data and/or data fusion shall be considered as meritorious.

The duties involve establishing and/or maintaining contacts with clients, partners and other researchers. Therefore, good collaboration skills are required. The work tasks require anchoring in theory and methodology, and you should be able to independently compile, analyze and present materials. We place great emphasis on your ability to take your own initiative and work independently. Advanced knowledge of written and spoken English is a requirement. The ability to write and express oneself in Swedish is an advantage.

Term of office

This position is a shared position between VTI and LiU at the same time as you are admitted to doctoral studies in Infra Informatics at the Division of Communication and Transport Systems at Linköping University. The appointment is valid for a maximum of one year at a time. A person who has been appointed and successfully devoted to doctoral studies has priority for continued appointment. The employment is limited to four and a half years full-time (including 10% departmental/institute duties at both LiU and VTI). The start date is August 2025.
