Department of Plant Breeding
The Department of Plant Breeding conducts research, education and innovational work of strategic importance for the society's long-term sustentation of provisions, industrial raw material and energy. At the same time we strive to meet the increasing need of raw material and at the same time make the plant production more and more environment-friendly. The department operates partly at the SLU campus in Alnarp, outside of Malmö and partly at the SLU property Balsgård, outside of Kristianstad. As an integrated part of the work, the department also conducts plant breeding programs concerning apple, black currant, sea buckthorn and potatoes. The PhD position is financed by GroGrund, the Swedish competence centre for plant breeding.

Genome Editing Potato
Description:
In order to supply people in the future with food and animals with feed, and at the same time convert to a bio-based economy within the industry, there is a need for an increased utilization of biological resources produced in agriculture. The most commonly used storage products of plants are starch, oil and protein. In many plants these products coexist with antinutritional compounds. For potato there are certain level requirements regarding glycoalkaloids and it is of great interest to secure the quality of e.g. potato protein for human consumption by controlling these substances. This PhD project will specifically focus on the biosynthesis of glycoalkaloids in potato and study the genetic mechanisms governing these substances using genome editing. The PhD student project will be in close cooperation with researchers at SLU in Uppsala and in interdisciplinary research projects.

The Department of Plant Breeding is now seeking a PhD student to the Division of Plant Biotechnology. In the project, the doctoral student will use modern plant breeding techniques, based on CRISPR-Cas9, to introduce targeted edits in the potato's genome with the goal of studying enzymatic and regulatory mechanisms for glycoalkaloids mainly in potato tubers. The work will include genomics, various molecular biology techniques, cell isolation and transfection, tissue culture, greenhouse experiments and analysis of consequences for glycoalkaloidbiosynthesis.
