SP are recruiting a PhD student position in wood microbiology
SP Technical Research Institute is Sweden's largest industrial research institute and develops technologies that promote the development and competitiveness of industry, and that uphold security, resource-saving and a good environment in society (www.sp.se/en/areas/wood). The Chair of Wood Science, Technische Universität München is performing education and research in wood anatomy and pathology, wood and fiber chemistry, wood physics and industrial processing, mechanical technology of wood and wood based products, and resource flow management (www.holz.wzw.tum.de). In a recently established joint research initiative both institutes cooperate in the field of wood pathology and microbiology and are recruiting a PhD student position in wood microbiology.
Research topic:
Wood material, chemically or physically modified, has an improved resistance against decay by wood decaying fungi. In contrary to traditional wood preservation, were the durability is achieved from the toxicity of the added chemicals, very little is known about the mode of action of the nontoxic wood modifications. The climate change (increased temperatures and a more humid climate) is expected to shorten the service life of outdoor wood products as these changes will facilitate microbial growth and thereby accelerate wood degradation. This project involves a state of the art approach to elucidate decay mechanisms of brown-rot fungi for various modifications and climate conditions. Methods to be used are DNA and RNA extractions from plant tissue, transverse transcription, PCR, qPCR and large-scale high-throughput methods.
Position:
The position will mainly be located at the Technische Universität München, at the facilities of Holzforschung München in Schwabing-West. The position is immediately available and limited to 3 years. The successful candidate will be offered a permanent position as researcher/scientist at SP in Sweden after finishing his/her studies.
Preferred Qualifications:
Highly qualified candidates with a deep commitment to basic research are invited to apply. Applicants should hold a MSc (or an equivalent degree) with a strong background in molecular biology, biological sciences, mycology, wood technology or a related discipline. Research and laboratory experience working with nucleic acids, qPCR or other molecular techniques is favorably considered. Excellent communication skills in English are necessary and basic knowledge in German is desired but not obligatory.
Benefit:
We offer a structured PhD program organized by Technische Universität München, state of the art facilities and cutting-edge research projects, an international science oriented working team addressing diverse fields of wood science and technology, individualized supervision and mentoring, and the opportunity to evolve within an international research team with possibilities for research stays in partner laboratories and countries.
Application:
Applications including a letter of motivation together with CV and a copy of relevant certificates should be sent preferably as one single pdf file to SP, Human Resources, apply no later than 31 January, 2012. State reference number 2011:53 in your application. For further information please contact Annica Pilgård, Mats Westin or Klaus Richter (phone: +49 (0) 89 2180 6421, e-mail: ).
SP is a leading international research institute. We create value in cooperation and offer quality throughout the innovation chain, which is very important for industrial competitiveness and sustainable development.
