PhD in Polymer Technology at SP the Department of Chemistry and Materials Technology.
Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is one of the most used polymers. PVC is always mixed with additives such as heat stabilizers and lubricants, to make processing possible. Other additives are added to alter its physical and mechanical properties. From an environmental perspective, some of these additives are questionable and extensive efforts have been made to replace them with alternatives having lower environmental impacts. The objective of this research project is to significantly reduce the environmental impact of plasticized PVC, mainly by reducing the leakage of additives. This will be done by developing plasticized PVC nanocomposites with nanofillers. PVC with alternative plasticizers based on renewable resources will also be evaluated in combination with nanofillers and compared with new commercial plasticizers.
The duration of a PhD education is four years (48 months). Applicants should have a university degree in chemistry, chemical or mechanical engineering or equivalent field. Good knowledge in polymers, analytical chemistry and chemical and mechanical engineering is qualifying. Successful candidates should be creative, have good interpersonal skills, power of initiative and a high degree of independence. Good knowledge in both written and spoken English is required.
General requirements include: (i) minimum 240 ECTS credit points (Swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), (ii) equivalent educational merits gained in Sweden or abroad, or (iii) 160 Swedish (old) credit points (Swe. poäng) (corresponding to 240 ECTS credit points) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007. In addition to these general requirements, 120 ECTS credit points need to be in chemistry and 60 ECTS credit points in polymer technology. The requirements mentioned need to be met at the time of acceptance to doctoral studies, not at the time when your application is submitted.
A complete application should include: (i) a cover letter summarizing your qualifications and motives for applying, (ii) a curriculum vitae, (iii) transcripts of records (a list of courses and marks obtained in the university education), and (iv) the names and contact information of 2 referees. Applications may be written in Swedish or English.
