In 2015, SWEMARC was decided to become one of six centers within the University of Gothenburg Center for Global Societal Challenges initiative.
SWEMARC has gathered a number of leading research groups in the fields of economy, social sciences, law, oceanography, biology and design with the aim of using transdisciplinary research to develop sustainable marine aquaculture models to increase sustainable food and biomass production for a growing population through marine aquaculture of plants and animals.
As part of this interdisciplinary research, the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) is now recruiting a PhD candidate in zoophysiology specializing in sustainable marine aquaculture.
Project description
The human population is estimated to exceed 9.5 billion in 2050. To produce nutritious food for all in a sustainable way is one of today's major challenges. SWEMARCs goal is to use interdisciplinary and community engaging research to increase the production of food from the sea in an environment friendly way.
The announced PhD project is in animal physiology focusing on sustainable aquaculture of marine fish with emphasis on how new alternative feed sources affect the physiology, growth and welfare of farmed fish. The research should also be put in the broader context of economic, social and ecological sustainability. The project will use the optimization of the wolffish aquaculture as a research model.
Job assignments
The main task is to conduct the PhD thesis work under supervision, which includes development of the PhD student?s methodology experience, analytical skills, and theoretical depth and breadth. This PhD project will be in collaboration between Bioenv and primarily the departments of Marine Sciences and Business Administration at the University of Gothenburg.
Work will be performed partly on Bioenv and partly at Sven Lovén center for marine infrastructure or other national or international infrastructures where research on wolffish can be carried out.
The PhD project work will include :
1) collaboration around the development of new feed and testing of these feed,
2) experimental biological studies on growth, feed conversion and welfare for wolffish during farming conditions with subsequent physiological analyzes,
3) analysis of economic and ecological aspects of marine aquaculture focusing on wolffish. The studies will include statistical analysis and compilation of results in scientific articles and will lead to that the PhD student writes a final summarizing thesis. The PhD student will also present results at conferences, seminars and project meetings. As a member of SWEMARC, the PhD student is expected to communicate and actively collaborate with the other members of SWEMARC.
