The Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg
PhD student position in medical science - Core language abilities in children with Autism
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/943 Project title: Core language abilities in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A population-based longitudinal study. Job assignments: Between the years 2009 and 2011 a project was conducted in Gothenburg, with the aim to identify children with difficulties in the realms of language and social-interaction skills. By language and autism screening of 2.5 year-old children, more than 100 children have been identified and diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These 100 children have also been followed up 2 years post initial clinical examination. The main applicant is the project leader for the clinical examination of all children. In the current proposal, all 100 children will be invited once again at the age of 6- 8 years for an in-depth assessment of language and communicative skills, and (social) cognitive level. In addition, the results of the children with ASD will be compared with a group of typically developing children. This project is a collaboration between researchers from different scientific disciplines (logopedics and psychology) in Sweden and England. The overall objectives are to use a theoretically and clinically appropriate test battery: 1. to identify and describe the language development of children with ASD from 2.5 to 6-8 years of age 2. to identify key developmental predictors of language development in children with ASD. Among other things, we will relate early measures of nonverbal social-communicative ability and verbal working memory to language development at 6-8 years of age 3. to characterize- for the first time- the developmental trajectories of different language phenotypes (i.e. language impairment or not) in children with ASD. The proposed project is unique from several perspectives, including the group of children with ASD are (i) large and (ii) the representative of the population, and (iii) extensively clinically investigated, with data available for the project. Previous follow-up studies of ASD have shown that language ability at early school age is a critical predictor of prognosis from a life perspective. In the project, we will develop new knowledge about language evolution and mechanisms in children with ASD. The results of the project will have theoretical implications, and have clinical relevance for planning assistance for small children who are diagnosed early with ASD. We would like the applicants to motivate why they interested in the project and why they are suitable applicants. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship.
