Titel:
PhD student position in medical science - Anabolic bone response to loading

Diary id: PAR 2017/82. Project title: Estrogen Receptor Signaling Pathways of Importance for the Anabolic Bone Response to Loading. Job assignments: Osteoporosis-related fractures constitute a major health concern and result in a huge economic burden on health care systems. Mechanical loading as a result of load bearing physical activity, and estrogen receptor (ER) signaling are major regulators of bone mass. We and others have demonstrated that the bone anabolic response to mechanical loading is mediated via ERs. The molecular mechanisms for the crucial role of ERs for these effects are mainly unknown. We, therefore, hypothesize that certain ER signaling pathways are specific for the anabolic bone response to loading. The overall aim of this research project is to identify ER signaling pathways of importance specifically for the bone anabolic response to loading. Thus, the role of different ER domains and posttranslational modifications of ERs for the anabolic bone response to loading will be determined using novel genetically modified mouse models. The identification and characterization of these particular ER signaling pathways may facilitate identification of novel drug targets for osteoporosis, leading to the development of treatments augmenting the bone anabolic effect of loading.

Eligibility:
To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have: 1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or 2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or 3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
