PhD student position
in Medical Science with orientation towards Molecular Biology
A PhD student position is available for research studies in molecular microbiology at the Department of Molecular Biology, The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Umeå University, Sweden (www.molbiol.umu.se, www.mims.umu.se).
The PhD student position is available within a research group studying bacteria-host interactions, in particular the genetic and molecular mechanisms by which pathogenic enterobacteria express virulence-associated properties. The project will focus on mechanisms and proteins in human pathogenic isolates of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The group home page can be found at www.mims.umu.se/groups.html
The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chapters 5 and 7). Prerequisites at time of registration as PhD-student include either i) 240 ECTS credits (swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level within Molecular biology, Biochemistry, bioengineering and /or Microbiology, or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence. The PhD student needs to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently and self-motivated, as well as in collaboration with others. Practical experience of research work in molecular microbiology and studies with enterobacteria are considered as merits.

The position will be covered by a postgraduate student allowance (“utbildningsbidrag”) for the first two years and the salary successively increases according to a stipulated scale in the last two years of the PhD position (“doktorandtjänst”). The position may require teaching up to 20% which will increase the total time of the position.
