Arbetsplats: The Sahlgrenska Academy
Titel: PhD student position in medical science - Novel models to study and treat melanoma
Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years if full-time studies Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/465 Cancer is a growing health problem that requires new knowledge and better therapies. To gain insight into the reason behind tumor development, molecular genetics have been instrumental. By inactivating so called tumor suppressor genes or hyper-activating genes known as oncogenes, cells can start to divide in an uncontrolled manner. The overall aim of our research is to contribute to better more efficient therapies of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Melanomas arise in the melanocytes, which are the pigmented cells in our bodies. Except for skin, melanomas also arise in other sites harboring melanocytes such as mucous membrane and eye. Melanoma of the eye is also called uveal or ocular melanoma. Uveal melanomas are rare but they are problematic since they often spread to sites like liver and lung, at which point they are difficult to treat efficiently. This project is focused on developing better models for uveal melanoma to be able to contribute to better treatment options for this disease. We would like the applicants to motivate why they are interested in the project and why they are suitable applicants. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral grant during the first year and doctoral studentship during the last three years, alternatively doctoral studentship.
