Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/1097 Job assignments: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects about 15% of the population globally and leads to markedly reduced quality of life. Current clinical treatment includes diet advice on foods to be avoided and eating habits. New recommendations according to the so called FODMAP model are being discussed, and here reduced intake of foods that specifically feed the gut microbiota is suggested. Our research team recently demonstrated that only half of treated patients respond to any of these two dietary treatments. Optimal dietary treatment of IBS would reduce suffering in a large proportion of the population. Challenges here include, in addition to the low response rate to dietary treatment, the range of symptoms in IBS with three main subgroups of patients who only partially deviate from healthy individuals with respect to anatomical and structural features. Is it possible to individualize treatment to obtain more responders? Does it matter for the dietary treatment which subgroup of IBS the patient belongs to? Is it possible to predict which IBS patients will respond to which kind of dietary treatment? These questions will be addressed in a PhD project with the overall aim to optimize future dietary treatment of IBS. The PhD student will learn the basics of individualized treatment for IBS, associations between food intake and the gut microbiota, study design for a clinical intervention and biochemical as well as statistical analysis within metabolomics. The newly established collaboration among research groups in nutrition, metabolomics and gastroenterology offers the PhD student unique opportunities to take advantage of resources and cutting edge knowledge in nutritional metabolomics and gastroenterology at the Sahlgrenska Academy. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship.
Beskrivning av kvalifikationer:
Eligibility: To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have: 1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or 2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or 3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The specific entry requirements is fulfilled if you have completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.
