Titel: PhD student position in medical science - Kinematics using virtual reality after stroke

Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/1101 Job assignments: The PhD project is part of a larger project, The Stroke Arm Longitudinal study at the University of Gothenburg (The SALGOT study), whose main objective is to investigate the prevalence of impaired arm-hand function after stroke and its consequences. The overall aim for the PhD project is to explore the kinematic data from the virtual reality set up in relation to the impairments and activity limitations in persons with affected upper extremity after stroke. Kinematics describes movements of the body through space and time, including linear and angular displacements, velocities and accelerations, but without reference to the forces involved. Virtual reality (VR) technology can provide quantitative kinematic data on person's movement performance. Our VR system has the haptic device can provide tactile feedback to the user through the force feedback, which is used in the test set-up. Data from healthy controls (n= 50) need to be gathered using the VR equipment. Also grip strength and manual ability will be assessed in this group. A method for analyzing the virtual reality is under development and will be tested in this study. Data from the SALGOT study (n=50 who showed sufficient upper extremity function in order to b e able to perform the VR-test.) has already been gathered according to the testing protocol longitudinally during the first year. The PhD project involves quantitative data analysis with traditional statistics as well some data mining and data modeling. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship.
