The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 270 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor's, Master's and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.

Our aim is to actively improve our gender balance in both our department and division. We therefore strongly encourage female applicants for our positions. As an employee at Chalmers and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, you are given the opportunity to contribute to our active work within the field of equality and diversity. We are working broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. This is an opportunity to be part of a vibrant research environment where we are not only inspired by rapid developments in technology, but also care about how technologies can improve our lives. We are fascinated by understanding how humans use computers in everyday life and enjoy people using things we build. You will contribute to a future in which interactive systems effectively support our daily activities and wellbeing.

Project description
The candidate will conduct research in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. Focus is on designing new interfaces for physically active users. More than half of Europe's population being physically active, focus of new technologies should shift from persuading users to be active to making physical activity more engaging. This project focuses on supporting users as they develop proficiency in sports, building systems that support growth while also helping better integrate physical activity in social lives, facilitating reflection and ensuring wide participation. The PhD student will investigate new frontiers in HCI for sports and build a research profile in studying technologies for wellbeing. The proposed research is transdisciplinary in nature and requires a strong interest both in hands-on interface development and in-depth user studies. The candidate will be supervised by Pawe W. Woniak.

The position is partially funded by the Swedish Research Council, offering ample opportunities for participation in the international research community and extensive support for the PhD candidate's personal development.

Information about the division and the department
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is strongly international, with approximately 300 employees from over 30 countries. It is a shared department between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. The position is placed in the Division for Interaction Design and Software Engineering (IDSE). Chalmers University of Technology will be your employer.

Major responsibilities
The position comes with enrollment in the PhD program for Computer Science and Engineering, designed for 5 years. As a PhD student, you undertake the journey of becoming an expert in the field of software engineering. Typically, this means carrying out high-quality research, writing academic articles, and taking courses to complement your background. The remaining 20% of your working time is devoted to teaching duties, such as helping as teaching assistant in courses. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, and you wish to learn Swedish, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have a master's-level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field: Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related area. We welcome participants with past research experience, but this is not a requirement. Excellent English communication skills are necessary. The ideal candidate should express a strong interest in research in HCI. Experiences of developing interfaces and conducting user studies will be considered as additional assets. Everyone deserves to feel at home at Chalmers. We welcome employees with a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
