In this PhD student position you will learn how to use human cells, both single cultures and co-cultures as models for nutrient uptake and interactions as well as the immune response this interaction causes. You will also learn how to isolate specific cells from human tissues and blood samples. These skills will be acquired by partaking in ongoing synergistic projects with focus on iron uptake and celiac disease.

Information about the division and the group
The Ph.D. student will be a member of the Nutritional Cell Biology group and supervised by assoc. professor Nathalie Scheers. Our main research focus is within the area of molecular nutrition, although our research interests also include other epithelial interactions connected to molecular aspects of health and disease. The goal is to understand disease mechanisms on the epithelial (intestinal, bronchial, hepatic) level and to translate the results into real life. We work on all levels to investigate hypothesis-driven questions - modelling, wet lab, human cell- and tissue models, and human intervention studies.

Major responsibilities
• Culture and conduct experiments in human cells, both single and co-cultures.
• Isolate cells from human tissue and blood samples.
• Run ELISA, Western blot and other molecular biological methods
• Mechanistic work on iron transport proteins (e.g. may involve inhibition or silencing studies)
• Develop an understanding of the project questions and solutions to be compiled into a doctoral thesis as well as being communicated at meetings and conferences during the duration of the work.

Qualifications
• Proficient in aseptic work and culturing of mammalian cells.
• Experience with standard molecular biological methods such as ELISA and Western blot is meriting.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
