There is also a regular visitor's exchange. Research domains include semiclassical analysis, spectral theory and partial differential equations.
Research is focused on direct and inverse problems in wave propagation of different types, as for example elastic, acoustic and gravitational waves. In direct problems we study the spectral characteristics of the system described by the partial differential equation complemented with boundary and initial conditions. The inverse problems focus on reconstruction of the parameters of the system from the spectral characteristics. When the waves can escape to infinity (open systems) the spectral characteristics are complemented by the resonances (quasinormal or leaky modes). As exact solutions to these problems can only be obtained in few special cases (typically reduced to one dimension), we often search for asymptotic solutions by introducing a "small" or a "big" parameter: semiclassical or high frequency limit.
The mathematical description of the process reunites the methods from complex analysis, microlocal analysis and geometry. The applications range from medicine (MRT tomography, ultrasound tests of cartilage, resonance frequency analysis of implants), seismology (reconstruction of the Earth crust from the measurements of the surface waves) to nanotechnology (electronic properties of graphene), and physics of black holes (discovery and analysis of the gravitational waves).
The PhD position concerns research in mathematical aspects of wave propagation using the methods of partial differential equations. The focus lies on development of the theory and effective reconstruction methods of the parameters of the system from the scattering data, and applications. For applications in medicine the PhD student will participate in departments work with Research Center for Biointerfaces,
http://www.mah.se/english/research/Centers/BRCB/.The PhD project will mainly focus on inverse spectral problems for wave propagation in elastic media with applications in seismology and medicine. However, the exact direction of the project will be dependent on the interests of the candidate.
The PhD student will profit from the traditionally strong research environments in partial differential equations at Lund and Copenhagen Universities.
Eligibility requirements for admission
To be eligible for PhD studies, a student must have:
1) a second-cycle higher education degree.
2) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle.
3) in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.
Regulations regarding admission to PhD studies can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 7 Chap. 34-41 §§.
Special admission requirements
Applicants must meet basic and special admission requirements for doctoral studies in applied mathematics according to the relevant study plan, see Section 4 in
http://science.prodwebb.lu.se/sites/science.lu.se/files/syllabi_mathematics.pdfBriefly, the admission requirements stipulate that at the time that the education grant begins, the applicant shall have either a master's degree in mathematics or equivalent qualifications. If in doubt regarding the applicant's qualifications, it is advisable to contact the department for more information. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is a prerequisite.
Information about third-cycle (doctoral) studies in Mathematics at Lund University:
http://www.maths.lu.se/english/phd-studies/Special requirements can also be fulfilled by demonstrating equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in some other way, nationally or internationally. The admission to PhD studies and employment as a PhD student is made in parallel.
About Malmö University
Since its inception in 1998, Malmö University has grown into the eighth largest institution of higher education in Sweden, with 25 000 students. Its education and research programmes are distinguished by their multidisciplinary, problem-oriented approach and social relevance. The university offers students a range of educations in five faculties: Culture and Society, Education and Society, Health and Society, Odontology, and Technology and Society.
Faculty of Technology and Society
The Faculty of Technology and Society (TS) offers educations and research in computer science and media technology as well as engineering and natural sciences and applied mathematics. A characteristic of our research and teaching is the engagement of companies and other organizations as active participants. We are located in Malmö city close to Malmö Central Station.
