PhD student position
– Development of New Laser-based Spectroscopic Techniques
for Sensitive Detection of Atoms and Molecules in Gas Phase
The Department of Physics has about 90 members including more than 30 PhD students. For more information see www.phys.umu.se/indexeng.htm. A general presentation of Umeå and the University can be found at the home page of the international office www.umu.se/international_office.
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD position in the Department of Physics at Umeå University, Sweden. The successful candidate is expected to work with Development of laser-based Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectrometry (CEAS) techniques, in particular Noise-immune Cavity Enhanced Optical Heterodyne Molecular Spectroscopy (NICE-OHMS), to powerful techniques for sensitive detection of molecules in gas phase.
Laser-based absorption spectrometric techniques have repeatedly proven to be useful for sensitive detection for atoms and molecules in gas phase and have become indispensable for trace gas detection. The most sensitive techniques of today are either based upon a modulation technique, for reduction of noise, or incorporate an external cavity (in which the light can bounce back and forth thousands of times) to increase the interaction length with the sample. Although some of these techniques are already used in environmental and industrial applications, there is a constant need to develop them further to meet the requirements of more demanding applications.
Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS-credits (swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007. In addition to these general requirements, 120 ECTS credits of these need to be in physics.
Motivated candidates that are fluent in English and are willing to take on a scientific and technological challenge are encouraged to apply. The application should include: i) a curriculum vitae; ii) transcripts of records; iii) names and contacts of 1 to 3 references; and iv) a cover letter summarizing your qualifications and motives for applying. If applicable, also attach a list of publications.
