Department of Forest Resource Management
The Department of Forest Resource Management conducts teaching and research in the areas of Mathematical Statistics Applied to Forest Sciences, Forest Remote Sensing, Forest Inventory and Sampling, Forest Planning and Landscape Studies. The Department is also responsible for several environmental monitoring and assessment programs, including the Swedish National Forest Inventory, National Inventory of Landscapes in Sweden, Terrestrial Habitat Monitoring and the Butterfly and Bumblebee Inventory. The work done by the Department combines research and environmental analysis in cross-disciplinary projects, which gives unique opportunities to develop holistic approaches for a sustainable use of the natural resources. Estimation of size and change of plant populations using simple occurrence data
Description:
The Department of Forest Resource Management invites applications for a PhD student position in Mathematical statistics. The successful applicant for this position is expected to work within the research project "Estimation of size and change of plant populations using simple occurrence data" financed by the Kempe Foundations. This PhD project aims to develop and apply novel tools for presence/absence (P/A) species data (i.e., only the presence or absence of a species on a field plot is registered), and for P/A data fused with Citizen Science data. P/A data are collected by national monitoring programs such as the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI) and the National Inventory of Landscapes in Sweden (NILS). Based on such data, the goal is to estimate plant density and change of plant density, both locally and across large regions. Such plant density estimates may be derived through models for spatial distribution of plants, e.g., by using point process models from the field of spatial statistics that are capable of modeling clustered patterns across the landscape, while taking geographical covariate information into account. The project is a collaborative effort between researchers from mathematical statistics, ecology, remote sensing, and forest inventory.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a BSc/MSc degree in mathematical statistics, statistics, or an equivalent degree. Advanced level courses in point processes and regression modelling are considered a merit, as well as skills in programming and experience of forestry-related applications. Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement. An ability and interest in co-operation with colleagues in other sciences is vital.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
