Duties
Research topic: "Ecological networks and their role for provisioning of ecosystem services"
Since the publication of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment the importance of recognizing and valuing the full range of ecosystem services, and the need for managing ecosystems accordingly, is a top priority in both ecological research and management. The world has already experienced several catastrophic events where ecosystem services have been lost with far-reaching consequences for human society e.g, the collapse cod fisheries and the wide-spread decline of pollinator species. However, even though specific species are providing the services, these species are always incorporated in the larger network interacting with other species. The functioning of such an ecological network is directly dependent on its structure, but the direct link between ecological network structure and ecosystem services is still missing. This research project focus on understanding and analyzing this connection and will use methods and theories from mathematics, complex network science and ecology. The work is theoretical but will to large extent use empirical data and the successful candidate will have extensive collaboration with empiricists. The successful candidate will be part of a strong and growing research group working in various areas of theoretical biology, using a diverse library of tools.
As a PhD student you will primarily devote your time to your research. As a PhD student you are limited devoted to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
Qualifications
The applicant should hold a Masters degree (or equivalent) in ecology/ bioinformatics/ mathematics /computer science etc. Training in theoretical/mathematical biology, probability/statistics, or related areas as well as excellent programming skills (for example R, Matlab, C, python) is highly desirable.
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period not exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years' full time research training.
Starting date
By agreement, but at latest September 1st 2016.
Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department's salary scale.
