The Department of Crop Production Ecology is part of the SLU Ecology Centre, one of the world 's leading research and education institutions for investigating agricultural ecosystems across scales.

A multi-scale feasability study of organic soybean and lupin production in Sweden
Description:
The framework of this PhD project is built by an interdisciplinary research project investigating the cultivation potential for lupin and soybean in Sweden. The project is seeking to combine approaches across production scales. As such, field experimentation to approach agronomic and ecological questions will be combined with suitability, farm and sustainability analyses, as well as consumer preference surveys. Overall, the project will determine how, and to what extent, lupin and soybean can be cultivated under Swedish conditions.

As a PhD student in this project, you will focus on the production system aspects, including the conduction of field experiments, data analysis and crop modelling. Your main activities will be to 1) assess the influence of crop management on crop productivity and quality as well as on weed-, pest- and disease infestation levels; 2) investigate the carry-over effect of soybean and lupin on succeeding crops; and 3) work on suitability zoning for soybean and lupin production in Sweden. Furthermore, you are required to summarise your research results in scientific and popular science articles.

You will have the opportunity to join an international network within science and the agricultural industry. An extensive training program in science and education will complement your PhD education.

Qualifications:
Candidates must hold an academic degree in agricultural sciences or a related topic and are required to demonstrate sound knowledge in the area of crop production. A good command of English (written and oral) is required. The work includes periods of fieldwork and travel across Sweden, therefore, a valid driving license is required. Experience in data analysis, modelling, as well as conducting field experiments is a merit. Communication skills in Swedish or another Scandinavian language is a merit.
