1 PhD student in the research education subject: Technology
Wood modification
A full time PhD student position is available at the Department of Forest Products, Division of Wood Science, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden. Wood modification has been already accepted as an alternative to the classic chemical wood treatments but better understanding of the process is necessary to further develop this technology. Screening of modification chemicals and reaction conditions. Various chemicals will be tested for chemical modification. These comprise organo-silicon compounds, epoxidised plant oils, tall oil derivates, vinyl acetate and combinations of these. The work concerns protection and modification aspects of solid wood/wood fibers, e.g. location of reagent and wood cell wall interaction with moisture. The levels of modification of the components will be determined by isolation and direct measurement using NMR, FTIR, and labelling techniques combined with SEM-EDX technique. The work comprises also comprehensive assessment of wood properties including, physical, mechanical, properties related to wood surface and durability. The project has also the ambition to specify wood modification processes ready to be applied in a cost effective and sustainable manner.
Qualifications
The applicants should posses a MSc (or equivalent) in organic chemistry, biochemistry, polymer science or a related discipline. Background in chemical modification of the main structural wood compounds and knowledge of novel modification techniques would be an asset. Additionally the candidates should be familiar with a range of analytical methods, e.g. HPLC, diverse spectroscopy techniques, TGA and microscopy. The successful candidate will join a research team working with protective formulations for wood modification based on in- and organic environmentally friendly substances. Additional requirements for this position include excellent communication and writing skills in English, ability to plan and carry on laboratory research work in collaboration with undergraduate, graduate students and co-workers. The position is initially for two years after which the candidate should take licentiate examination
