Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2,1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering (CENE) offers unique, collective research expertise in civil and structural engineering. The research subject of Structural Engineering is now seeking a motivated researcher who will contribute to the science and technology of structural condition assessment, structural dynamics and application of composite materials.

Subject description
Structural Engineering includes loads, design, sustainability, load carrying capacity, repair and strengthening, of buildings and civil engineering structures made of concrete, steel, wood and other materials, separately or in combination, at normal conditions, in cold climate and in fire.

Project description
This PhD project focuses on the development of self-sensing fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (SS-FRCMs) for the dual purpose of structural strengthening and real-time health monitoring of infrastructure. The research is structured into two main areas: (1) material development and characterization to ensure optimal sensing and mechanical performance, and (2) structural evaluation of SS-FRCMs under environmental stressors such as freeze-thaw cycles and chloride exposure. Your work will contribute to more sustainable infrastructure by enabling proactive maintenance, reducing environmental impact, and minimizing the risk of unexpected structural failures.

Duties
We are looking for a motivated PhD student to join a cutting-edge research project. As a PhD student, you will conduct both experimental and theoretical work within the framework of the project. You will also contribute to field studies and collaborate with public and private stakeholders to test and validate the monitoring technologies. Participation in national and international conferences, and publication of scientific papers is expected.

As a PhD student you will take compulsory and elective doctoral courses, gradually plan and execute your research project with increasing independence during your studies. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects. In addition, you may be involved in teaching activities and contribute to other research initiatives within the structural engineering group.

Qualifications
To be eligible for the position, you must hold an MSc in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related field, or possess equivalent qualifications. Good communication skills in English, both oral and written, are required.

In addition to strong academic performance in relevant undergraduate and Master's-level coursework, the following qualifications will be considered merits:

• A background in structural strengthening, smart materials, degradation mechanisms of materials or structures, or structural health monitoring, demonstrated through coursework, project work, or thesis research at the undergraduate or Master's level.
• Experience with experimental work, particularly in material characterization and/or large-scale structural testing.
• Demonstrated scientific writing ability; prior authorship or co-authorship of peer-reviewed journal or conference papers relevant to the subject area of the PhD project.
• Experience or interest in sustainability aspects of construction materials or infrastructure systems, such as the use of supplementary cementitious materials, life cycle assessment, or circular design principles.
