Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Extreme Plasma Flares project, a collaboration between Chalmers, Gothenburg, IRF, Uppsala, and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm. Plasma flares - explosive releases of magnetic energy - play a central role in such diverse phenomena as solar flares, aurora, and fusion plasmas. One of the outstanding questions is what conditions lead to the most extreme electron acceleration events.

The PhD project will focus on the analysis of extreme acceleration events associated with magnetic reconnection. The PhD student will work with state-of-the-art experimental data from the NASA multi-spacecraft Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) mission.

Our team performs observations, data analysis, and modeling of space plasma processes (https://www.irf.se/en/research/space-plasma-physics/). The team has decades of experience developing and operating instruments to measure electric fields, plasma temperature, density, and density fluctuations for spacecraft missions (e.g., Cluster, MMS, Swarm, Cassini, Rosetta, Solar Orbiter, JUICE, Comet Interceptor).

The position is available at the Uppsala office at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), located at Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, starting at the latest in the first half of 2024 for a total duration of four years. The PhD student will belong to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University and must fulfill the university requirements. Information on research education is available at http://www.physics.uu.se and http://www.teknat.uu.se.
