hela Sverige The Solar System Physics and Space Technology research programme at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna invites applications for a PhD student position in Space Physics, related to the European Space Agency Venus Express mission.
Venus Express is ESAs first mission to Venus. After more than 8 years of operations, Venus Express has gathered a large dataset on the space plasma environment. In 2014, Venus Express completed a so-called aerobraking manoeuvre, during which it also obtained a unique dataset of low altitude samples. Applications are invited for a PhD student position to study the plasma environment in the vicinity of Venus, using data from IRFs space plasma instrument ASPERA-4 (Analyser of Space Plasma and EneRgetic Atoms).
The PhD student will participate in analysing the data from ASPERA-4 collected in the Venusian ionosphere during unique low altitude spacecraft dives. The focus will be on understanding the electrodynamics of this region, which is critical for revealing how the space environment affects the Venusian atmosphere.
The applicant is expected to have a MSc (or comparable academic degree) in physics at the time of admission. Experience in scientific computing and knowledge of space physics is desirable. The PhD student should start during 2015, and will be enrolled at Umeå University (and must therefore fulfill the university requirement for a PhD student). The position is in Kiruna and provides salary for four years of study, funded by the Swedish National Space Board.
