1 PhD student in the research education subject: Soil Science
Fertility of agricultural soils
Large uncertainties remain in our ability to assess how terrestrial element cycles, agricultural management and climate feedbacks interact. In long-term field experiments, minute annual changes in soil fertility and associated properties accumulate over time. We manage a number of long- and medium-term agricultural field experiments, some over 50 years old. These (and the corresponding soil archive) have been and is a generator of scientific knowledge as well as supplier of calibration points for models used for projections into the future. This project will mainly focus on soil organic matter dynamics (including carbon and nitrogen cycling) in the perspective of a changing climate, using isotopic signatures in soil profiles coupled with dynamic mathematical modeling. As time goes by, artifacts such as compaction, methodology changes and wind-blown transports will accumulate in long-term data series. This is particularly serious as the demands for high precision in the results are increasing, since the outcome may even influence environmental policies and legislation. Another focus of this work will therefore be on precision, bias and uncertainty of results in long-term time series and how we can improve our methodology. We need to know more about how well we do and how we can improve. The work will be performed within a group of 5-6 Ph D students working in closely related subjects (soil respiration, resistant carbon, soil cultivation effects etc.). The research will involve collaboration with research groups at CIAT-TSBF, Nairobi, SLU in Skara and probably statistical/modeling/mathematical expertise from other universities. Other tasks at the Department (e.g., teaching or administrative work) may be included, up to a maximum of 20% of full time. The PhD position involves research education at full time during four years.
Qualifications
An academic degree in natural sciences corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits (compatible with ECTS credits) of which at least 60 credits is in Soil Science or similar subjects. Good skills in English (both written and oral).

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
