Architectural artefacts, ranging from informal textual and graphical descriptions to models conforming to well-defined formalisms, evolves both during the development of the system and as a result of system evolution and maintenance. In development processes based on one-way deliverables or transformations from architectural descriptions to lower level artefacts, such as design specifications and eventually code, evolution is often handled by means of change requests to be considered in the next development cycle.
At the same time, the increasing amount of software in these systems means that the trend in other domains of software development, towards shorter development cycles and more continuous integration of new functionality, is becoming a reality also for this type of systems. Such a change towards more agile software development is hindered by heavyweight processes for architectural evolution.
The long-term goal of this project is to enhance the support for evolution of architectural and design artefacts, in order to allow for increased flexibility and shorter development cycles. The research will initially focus on identifying key impediments in existing processes, formalisms and tools, and developing means to remove or reduce them.
As a PhD student, you will spend a minimum of 80% of your time on research studies. The rest will be spent on educational and/or administrative duties. The planned starting date is September 1, 2017.
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).
To qualify as a PhD student, you should have a master's level degree or equivalent with a solid documented background in computer science or software engineering. You may apply even if you have not completed your degree, but plan on doing so before the PhD student position starts.
We require the suitable candidate to be proficient in writing, speaking and reading English, since disseminating and communicating scientific results is a must in this position.
Knowledge and experience in software architecture is required. In addition, knowledge and experience in model-driven engineering and industrial software engineering is meriting.
MDH in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden's biggest university colleges with its 15 000 students and 900 employees. Most study programmes fall into four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and technology. In 1999, MDH was the world's first university to be environmentally certified, and in 2006, it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.
MDH is now recruiting a PhD student in the ESAA project (Evaluation Support for Architectural Artefacts). The project is funded by Software Center (
http://softwarecenter.gu.se), a collaboration between four Swedish universities and ten industrial partners including Volvo, Ericsson and Siemens, with the goal to significantly increase the competitiveness of the industry partners by modernizing their software development processes.
