PhD student in Production Technology - Simulation Based Optimisation as a method to maximize utilization of production systems. Ref. no R 2012/51
Project description: Simulation-based optimization (SBO) is a well-established research method for optimization of complex systems. To create an accurate simulation model of a real production system for SBO requires good knowledge of the production process itself. Available tools to create such a model require specialist knowledge in both programming and model building. This requirement precludes SBO as an industrial accepted method within production system simulation. Another obstacle is the time consuming and comprehensive data collection. Also the resources and time needed for creating and validating the simulation model is a major drawback. The research group within Flexible Industrial Automation has been working on this topic for many years. A framework for discrete event system control and simulation are currently under development. The idea is to combine this framework with SBO to open up new opportunities to optimize complex production systems. This project will investigate new methods to optimize large and complex simulations models for on-line control.
The scientific work in the project: The PhD project includes: a comparative and a comprehensive study of optimisation methods, formulation of strategies for dealing with the large number of degrees of freedom, development of new algorithms for large and complex simulation models. Further, the simulation framework must be adapted to the new algorithms and strategies to become an efficient SBO method.
Doctoral degree programme: Production Technology
Job description: The research programme includes, in addition to participation in third-cycle courses, implementation of an independent. Students who are employed as research students shall primarily devote themselves to their own education. A person so employed may, however, be engaged to a limited extent in education, research and administration. Such duties, before a doctorate has been conferred, may not occupy more than 20 per cent of full-time working hours. (Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 5 section 2). Any departmental duties (20 %) are carried out mainly in the field of Production Technology.
Qualification requirements for the doctoral programme: The basic eligibility requirements for doctoral programmes as set out in the Higher Education Ordinance are as follows:
• A degree at master's level,
• completed courses totalling at least 240 university credits of which a minimum of 60 at master's level or,
• substantially equivalent knowledge gained in some other way whether in Sweden or abroad*
To fulfill the special eligibility requirements for a doctoral degree in Production Technology, a student must hold a degree at master's level in a subject relevant to the doctoral degree subject. This degree may be in Production Technology or some related discipline.
The eligibility requirements may be fulfilled by studies in Sweden or abroad. Applicants from outside Sweden whose native language is not English, Swedish, Norwegian or Danish will normally have to take an English language test (for example, TOEFL 575 (paper-based)/TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) before being admitted.
• A student who satisfied the eligibility requirements for doctoral programmes before 1 July 2007 (120 university credits at bachelor's level or the equivalent knowledge) will also after that date be considered to have satisfied doctoral level eligibility requirements. This regulation will cease to apply at the end of 2015.

http://www.hv.se/extra/pod/?id=711&module_instance=11&action=pod_showSelection for the doctoral programme: The basic factor for selection from among qualified applicants is the ability to profit from such a programme. For more information please read 3.3 in General syllabus of Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Production Technology, Ref. No 2011/909 B 25.
Qualification requirements for the position:
• Documented knowledge and work experience in computer programming.
• Fluent in at least the following programming languages: C#, C/C++, MATLAB scripts.
• Experience with software development in large scale projects.
• Good knowledge in computer based production simulations techniques and software's.
• Good knowledge in optimisation methods and algorithm development.
• Knowledge in industrial automation.
• Master of Science in Industrial Sciences with a specialisation in production technology or mechanical/electrical engineering.
Additional qualifications that are a merit:
• Experience of different non-gradient optimisation algorithms such as, simplex, Lipschitzian and evolutionary methods.
• Experience with simulation software, specifically Siemens Process Simulate and Plant Simulation.
• Experience of research work and scientific writing
Duration and terms of employment: Employment as a doctoral student shall be on an open-ended basis but not for longer than to a specific point in time and never for a period extending more than one year after receiving the doctoral degree. The initial appointment must not be for more than one year. The appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may be employed as a research student for a total of not more than eight years. The total period of employment, however, may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study at the third level of higher education. (Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 5 section 7).
