We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
We are hiring a PhD Student in Process Metallurgy who will do research in the field "Recovery of metals from by-products from the production of zinc, copper, nickel, and lead." The research is demand-driven fundamental research conducted in collaboration with senior researchers and industrial partners. As a PhD Student, you will be part of a dynamic and international research environment with close collaboration with partners from research institutes and industry.

Subject description
Process Metallurgy is concerned with the sustainable extraction of metals from primary and secondary raw materials using both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.

Project description
You will perform research in a project with the aim to generate new knowledge for recovering valuable metals from by-products and intermediate materials from the production of zinc, copper, nickel, and lead in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner. Research will be conducted to gain an in-depth and fundamental understanding of the properties of by-products and their potential for the recovery of valuable metals.

The initial focus will be on the characterization and mapping of various available materials, followed by an investigation into potential options to increase metal extraction while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of any remaining by-products. Valuable metals offer economic benefits when extracted, but processing costs must be considered, as well as the cost of the final disposal of any by-products, along with energy requirements, carbon dioxide emissions from the intended process, and water consumption.

The project includes significant parts of experimental and practical research, such as characterization and laboratory experiments, but may also involve modeling to enhance understanding of the phenomena under study.

Duties
As a PhD Student, you are employed at the university and expected to perform both experimental and theoretical research. The position aims to develop you into an independent researcher, meaning you will conduct research and communicate your results in international conferences and scientific journals. Most of your time will be devoted to your research studies, but you may also try the teacher role. As a researcher, you are a neutral party in many contexts, which provides an excellent opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects.

Qualifications
You are an enthusiastic, goal-oriented, and highly motivated person who wants to conduct advanced research in Process Metallurgy. You are comfortable working independently and with internal and external partners in a group context. Above all, you are determined to continuously develop your skillset and contribute to research that furthers the knowledge within the field of process metallurgy. You are required to have a M.Sc. in metallurgical engineering, hydrometallurgy, chemical engineering, inorganic chemistry, process chemistry, material science, or similar. You should master English on a professional level, both written and verbal. Experience in experimental work, hydrometallurgy and inorganic chemistry is meritorious. When enquired, you must be able to provide contact details for two references.
