Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics Uppsala
1 PhD student in the research education subject: Plant physiology
Genetic mechanisms of fruit development
Appropriate fruit development has a great impact on reproductive success of plants and on crop yield (fruit or seed crops). Fruits are very complex plant organs and requiring multiple genetic and hormonal pathways to control their developmental programs. Many key genetic factors have already been identified, but the details are largely unknown. We now aim to fine-map the activity of genetic regulators during fruit development in order to produce tools for crop improvement. To attain this objective, we will use advanced methods to isolate specific cell-types for transcriptional and hormonal analysis. Research environment: The successful applicant will work in the research group of Prof. Eva Sundberg at the Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics at the SLU, Uppsala. The department offers a creative and stimulating international environment, and is one of six departments that will make up the new cluster ?Uppsala BioCenter? at SLU. The research group and the department contributes to internationally recognized basic and applied science in plant biology; for more information visit the web page at
http://www.slu.se/en/faculties-and-departments/faculty-of-natural-resources-and- agricultural-sciences/about-the-faculty/departments/department-of-plant-biology- and-and-forest-genetics/ The student will also spend time in the lab of Doc. Karin Ljung at UPSC, SLU, in Umeå (
http://www.upsc.se/) , to learn methods for cell-type isolation.
Qualifications
Higher university degree in molecular biology (Degree of Master or Master of Science) with emphasis on plant functional genomics, molecular genetics, plant physiology, developmental biology or corresponding topics. Document abilities to manage a laboratory research project are required. Documented lab work experience in plant handling, plant molecular biology, and/or knowledge of bioinformatic tools is highly valued. The selection will be based on the written application, cv, diploma/exam work, personal references, good knowledge in English and an interview.
