Sex determination and genomics of speciation in willows
Project description: The first aim of this project is to study the genetics behind sex determination in willows that belong to the plant genus Salix. Sex determination in this genus has long been an enigma and so far very little is known about this in willows or in any other diocious plant species without sex chromosomes. Salix spp. belong together with poplars (Populus) to the plant family Salicaceae. Many willows display rapid growth and high biomass yields and these characteristics together with ease of vegetative propagation via stem cuttings make them economically attractive as a bioenergy crop. This project will use QTL mapping, DNA sequence analyses and functional studies of candidate genes in order to target the key genes in this process. The evolutionary conservation of sex determination in willows will also be characterized by studying this in different species. The second aim of this project is to use a genomics and population genetics approach to identify key genes involved in reproductive isolation between two particularly interesting willow species, S. viminalis and S. schwerinii. RNA sequencing of S. schwerinii and subsequent alignment to the S. viminalis draft genome sequence will be our initial approach.
Research environment: The successful applicant will work in the research group of Sofia Berlin Kolm at the Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics at SLU in Uppsala. The department offers a creative and stimulating environment, and is one of six departments that make up the Uppsala BioCenter at SLU. The research group and the department contribute to internationally recognized basic and applied science in plant genetics and genomics.
Project funding and start: This is a VR funded project for four years. Project start will be in August 2012.
