The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. PhD student in Materials physics
formally based at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM)
Duties
The project for which we are now looking for new staff concerns fundamental research within material physics, primarily theory and modelling of atomically laminated materials.
The PhD student will perform theoretical calculations and simulations of 3D and 2D materials by primarily Density Functional Theory (DFT). The materials in focus are known and unknown (hypothetical) phases, including multinary alloys in the form of solid solutions and chemically ordered structures.
The 3D materials will be evaluated by thermodynamical and mechanical stability, including evaluation of bond strength, for guidance of experimental work on realization of novel 2D materials for, e.g., energy storage and catalysis.
The PhD student will be part of an international team with strongly linked theoretical and experimental activities.
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
The applicant should have MSc degree or equivalent in physics, materials chemistry or materials science/engineering. Documented experience from previous work on theory and modelling of materials is beneficial. The applicant must have fluent (correct) English spoken and written.
Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years ' full time research training.
Starting date
By agreement.

The salary for PhD students is based on the department's salary scale.
