We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.The research topic of Pervasive and Mobile Computing focuses on basic and application-oriented research in software systems, distributed applications, and human-computer interaction in several application areas. In recent years, the group has also focused specifically on how computer game technology can be applied to new areas such as health, education, and entertainment. We are now searching for a doctoral student in extended reality and applied games technology in education and healthcare domain.
Subject description
Pervasive and mobile computing address distributed systems and mobile networks which enable mobility, ubiquity, security and interactivity of computers, data, software and users.
Project description
The PhD project will be carried out within the Green Gaming and PRECISE projects. The projects take place in close cooperation between researchers, municipalities, higher education institutions and NGOs working with young people. The main funder is the European Union.
The Green Gaming - developing soft and digital skills through game-based approach to address 21st century challenges such as climate change, is a project that aims at developing extended reality games and methodologies that uses game-based approach to achieve climate action targets and resilience among young people. The PRECISE project is aimed to develop, and research personalized extended reality games, and gamification interventions for addressing mental health among young people.
The overall scientific objective is to study, ideate, design and implement games, approaches and methodologies that utilizes extended reality technologies in the education and healthcare domain. As part of this, there will be a focus on the human-computer interaction, and study of young people's quality of experience in virtual interactive environments.
Duties
As a PhD student you are expected to perform both software development, experimental and theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. As PhD student you will follow an individual study plan and study third-cycle courses. In addition, you can have the opportunity to try the teacher role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects.
Qualifications
The qualifying background for applicants is an excellent master's degree in computer science or equivalent. You must be able to express yourself in English, at an advanced level, in writing, and orally.
The following competencies and knowledge are meritorious;
• Documented experience, knowledge, theory, methods, and research in game development, and interactive systems.
• Documented aptitude and ability in the development of game engines and 3D environments, XR (VR, AR, MR), games development, portfolio, with frameworks such as Unity3D and/or Unreal Engine.
• Proven competence and skills in several programming languages for example C#, C++.

Employment as a PhD student is limited to 4 years, teaching and other department duties may be added with max 20%. Placement: Skellefteå; Starting: October 1, 2023.
