Do you want to become one of us and contribute to developing an organization that, after more than 250 years, seethes with curiosity, spirit of discovery and creativity?

The Swedish Museum of Natural History's position is to be the Research Museum that shows the way. We offer a dynamic environment where many different professions and skills work together. The museum is responsible for world-unique natural history collections that are constantly growing and developing. The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a research museum and one of the country's most popular destinations. Successful research and important environmental monitoring are carried out here. We have over eleven million objects in the collections, which form the basis for our successful research in geology, palaeontology, zoology, botany, and other topics. The Swedish Museum of Natural History also offers a leading forum for meetings between researchers and between science and the public.

At the Department of Palaeobiology (PAL) we address questions about the origin of life on Earth and the evolution of fauna and flora through time. We employ interdisciplinary approaches, such as palaeontology, sedimentology, and biogeochemistry to resolve questions about the ancient past. We study the structure of fossil plants and animals, undertake taxonomic studies, and utilize the diversity and specialized adaptations of past life to interpret and reconstruct ancient ecosystems.

Here we invite applications for a four-year PhD. The project concerns palynology, palaeobotany and plant physiology. The fellowship will be jointly hosted by the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Dept. of Paleobiology) in collaboration with plant physiologists at Lund University and with the successful applicant undertaking most work at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Stockholm, Sweden) but with regular visits to Lund University, Dept. of Biology.

WORK TASKS
The research undertaken as part of this fellowship will focus on palynology and palaeobotany across mass extinction events. Based at PAL, this project will be aimed at developing a deeper and more dynamic understanding of paleo-ecosystem change including climate and diversity changes across mass extinction events. The tool kit will involve exceptionally well-preserved fossils and the project will be accomplished by utilising techniques such as light microscopy, SEM, TEM, confocal microscopy and also involve the development and application of these novel methods in addressing major scientific questions in evolution and recovery of life across extinction boundary event. Furthermore, the project involves analysis of modern plant material from controlled chamber experiments. An important part of the project aims to link pollen and macro plants collected from Mesozoic successions of Sweden. The student may be involved in fieldwork. Ca. 10% administrative tasks are included in the position such as: supervision of master students, collection management and outreach activities at the museum.

QUALIFICATIONS
The applicant must have completed a master degree in Palaeobiology in Sweden or an equivalent degree from another country at the time the appointment commences. The applicant must be able to communicate and write in English.

The applicant must have experience in palaeobotanical field work and curation of palaeobotanical specimens in field and documented knowledge in plant systematics including formal taxonomical descriptions of plants, documented knowledge in working with palaeobotanical collections.

The following personal characteristics are considered important: being thorough, flexible and be able to take initiatives.

OTHER

The applications should be written in Arial (font size 11, and 2.5 cm margins) and must include the following:
1. A Curriculum Vitae comprising maximum three pages, which includes details on the MSc degree and the applicant's previous and current employments.
2. A scanned copy of the MSc degree certificate or a letter from supervisor confirming MSC is under examination.
3. A publication list , including conference abstracts.
4. Contact details for two references.
The position is for four years. A new position as a PhD student is first for one year and then normally renewed for up to two years at a time.

We advance our knowledge of the natural world, inspiring to better care of our planet. Our ambition is that the employees of The Swedish Museum of Natural History shall represent the diversity in Sweden and we welcome every applicant.

We have decided upon choices for marketing. Therefore we decline contact with sales agents, recruitment sites and similar.
