We are looking for a PhD student that wants to be a part of an European project that aims at developing techniques that will charactrerize and use higher-order transverse modes in optical fibers. In this position you will work with transmission system experiments as well as theoretical aspects such as channel models and electromagnetic modelling of modes in various fiber types. You will get the opportunity to visit other partners within the project, both industrial and academic.

Information about the research project
The Internet is powered by optical fiber communications, with the world's data flowing through drawn pieces of glass, each slightly thicker than a human hair. While technological advances have enabled six orders of magnitude increase in throughput over the last half century, we are rapidly approaching the so-called capacity crisis, where throughput will flatten out, but demands increase unabated. This project will study the prospect of using higher order modes in various novel optical fiber designs for either data transmission, sensing, lasing or other emerging photonic technologies. The project will involve experimental work on characterization of higher order modes as well as theoretical modelling of linear and nonlinear transmission such modes. The project is a European collaborative effort between 8 partners from 5 countries and will involve limited-time secondments at other partners within the project.

You will be part of the Fibre Optic Communications Research Centre (FORCE) at Chalmers, bringing together researchers in communications, photonics, electronics, and networking to solve hard problems in optical communications through a cross-disciplinary approach. The collaboration bridges traditional discipline boundaries and includes the whole chain from components to networks, from analysis to experiments.

Chalmers University of Technology is located in Gothenburg on the scenic west coast of Sweden. It is among the top research schools in Europe. The research environment is international and English is the working language.

Major responsibilities
You will participate in research as outlined above and conduct experimental work supported by numerical simulations and analytical theory. You will be part of a bigger project where the participants contribute with their unique skills. The appointment offers great opportunities to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry as we have numerous ongoing collaborations with the leading groups internationally. Included in your work is also taking part in the supervision and teaching of undergraduate students.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar, with a background in electromagnetic modelling, optics and photonics. You need to have programming skills in e.g. Martlab or Python and feel comfortable with presenting scientific results both in writing and orally. We are looking for a self-propelled and creative person that enjoys solving complex problems in collaboration with others.

Meritorious:
• Knowledge in photonics or communications
• Experience with photoninc lab work, optical fiber technology, Matlab and other simulation software
• Teaching experience and scientifc publications.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years, including teaching and other departmental duties. There are no tuition fees for PhD studies at Chalmers.

We offer
Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
