1 PhD student in the research education subject: Molecular Genetics
Characterization and Molecular Evolutionary Analysis of the Equine Mhc
In this project you will use next generation sequencing (NGS) to characterize the genetic complexity and diversity of the complete Major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) region in the horse. The Mhc, ?the center of the immune universe? is a gene-dense region of crucial importance for initiating immune responses against infectious organisms and for combatting infectious diseases. It contains some of the most polymorphic genes in the mammalian genome and encodes for molecules that bind and present peptides from viruses, bacteria and parasites to T-lymphocytes and thereby trigger an adaptive immune response. A hallmark of Mhc evolution is the diversifying selection that is influenced by the interaction between host and microorganisms. The outcome of this challenging project will be invaluable for the understanding of inherited disease susceptibility in the domestic horse and for evolutionary processes in general.
Qualifications
An MSc degree or equivalent in a relevant field is required. We seek a highly motivated student with thorough education and strong interest in evolutionary genomics and population genetics. Previous experience with next generation sequencing methods, bioinformatics, computer programming and statistics is advantageous. We are looking for individuals who can work independently but also as part of a team. Candidates must be fluent in English (orally and written). Please prepare a letter of intent including descriptions of 1) your motivation for PhD studies in general and for this position in particular, 2) your education, especially in genetics, evolutionary biology, genomics, bioinformatics, computer programming, molecular biology, and statistics. The application should further include a CV, an authorized copy of your MSc degree, and the names and contact information (address, email address, and phone number) of at least two reference persons. Relevant publications (including your MSc thesis) should be enclosed. The application must be written in English.
